This is a blog about my son Matt and his friends. Matt was born May 1,1990. There were a few complications with his birth such as his heart rate dropping for a few minutes and the aminotic fluid was meconium stain, but Matt was born healthy weighting in at 8 lbs 2 oz. Matt appeared to be healthy in every way. He was on the slow end of his motor development, but in the normal range. In fact a woman I didn't know at that time but had an older daughter that was mutal friends with my daughter in the neighborhood had a downs syndrome little girl born one week after Matt. and I remember thinking to my self thank goodness Matt is normal. Latter Matt and Robin the little girl with down syndrome would become friends and Matt would take her to Homecoming dance their senior year of High School.
It was when Matt had turned 3 years old that I became really worried about him. He wasn't talking. People would tell me "Oh it is because he has 4 sisters and a brother to get him what he wants he doesn't need to talk" My heart was telling me diffrent. One day I was studying for a cerftication in nursing with some of my nuring friends, when my neighbor from across the street called me and said "I think
you should get Matt's hearing checked, he was playing with Austin and I asked him to do something and he didn't respond at all." ( note Austin is a boy that was born one day after Matt and they played together.)
The first miracle, was that day. As I said at the time I got the call from my neighbor I was studying with nurses for a certification required for my job in nursing. I told the nurses that were at my house my concerns about Matt and that I was at a lost of what to do or where to go. One of the nurses use to be a school nurse, she suggested that I call the school district and see if they would check Matt out for hearing and other disablities. I did, it was Nov. 1993. I took him for several days worth of test, aweek latter I went back to find out the results. They told me Matt was developmentally delayed. They didn't know how bad his disablities were as right now he tested just below normal. They suggested that I put him in Special Education and he could start a develomentllay pre-school that would help him with his speech and other disorders. They handed me the papers to sign to put him in special education, it was tears that I signed the papers. When I climbed into the car I cried and thought have I labeld my child for life. Little did I know that this was a beginning of meeting new freinds people and seeing many mircales.
